Roman emperor Essay Example for Free
Roman emperor Essay Roman emperor Nero has once said: ââ¬Å"Let them hate, if they only fearâ⬠. These words can serve as an outstanding bearing of many totalitarian leaders and regimes. Fear is inspired by fear and creates fear like a chain reaction. This feature of absolute power has been noticed and described by many authors. In his ââ¬Å"1984â⬠, which is, undoubtedly, the most famous most famous anti-utopia of all times, George Orwell could not have disregarded the topic of fear. It is not fear itself, which makes the power of the Big Brother so strong, but fear and terror are organic elements of his influence. It is actually not even fear before the Big Brother himself, because Big Brother wants love and makes everyone love him even against their will. In case Big Brother and the ruling party were a source of fear themselves, they would never retain their power. People use to hate that what they are afraid of and to be afraid of that, what they fear, so in the ââ¬Å"1984â⬠society fear and hate are pointed against someone, who is outside the system. Orwell has developed the topic of such ââ¬Å"outsideâ⬠fear in his earlier story ââ¬Å"Animal Farmâ⬠. A pig, named Napoleon, used to say, that all animals should work hard, in case they do not want Jones, a previous master, to come back. And this natural concern of the Animal Farm inhabitants is exploited by the pigs to support control over the rest of the animals. The loyal citizens of Oceania do not fear Big Brother, but in fact love and revere him. They feel he protects them from the evils out there. The purported love and hate walk closely which is illustrated in the end of the Two Minutes Hate:ââ¬Å" At this moment the entire group of people broke into a deep, slow, rhythmic chant of B-B! . B-B! . B-B! ââ¬âover and over again, very slowly, with a long pause between the first B and the secondââ¬âa heavy murmurous sound, somehow curiously savage, in the background of which one seemed to hear the stamps of naked feet and the throbbing of tom-toms. For perhaps as much as thirty seconds they kept it up. It was a refrain that was often heard in moments of overwhelming emotion. Partly it was a sort of hymn to the wisdom and majesty of Big Brother, but still more it was an act of self-hypnosis, a deliberate drowning of consciousness by means of rhythmic noise. In 1984 such fear is inspired by the foreign enemies. His Oceania was engaged in constant warfare with Eastasia and/or Eurasia which kept the citizens in a constant state of mobilization and alert. Although war constantly rages on, the three powers in which the world is divided are now unconquerable. In the dictatorship of Oceania, the citizens live in fear each day, unsure exactly where the enemy bombers that fly overhead will decide to drop their missiles. Julia, even has the impression that it is Oceania itself, not the enemy, dropping bombs on the country. This is how the Inner Party takes any means to strike fear in the hearts of every citizen. Another source of fear are spies, which are said to be living between the loyal citizens, and which are sent by the symbol of all enemies Goldstein to ruin the ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠life. Orwell starts to sketching out the features of a totally oppressive society already at the beginning of his novel. He plays on his readers fears of powerlessness and own experiences of oppression. The social surroundings of the novel are depicted on the basis of Orwells experiences of wartime London. He uses the descriptive techniques of literary naturalism to produce images of a society of extreme material deprivation: Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him. The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. Winston made for the stairs. It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working and at present the electric current was cut off during daylight hours. The flat was seven flights up, and Winston, who was thirty-nine, and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way. However, it is not only material fear, which drive Winston, Julia and others. It is fear of themselves, their own thoughts and opinions. Winstonââ¬â¢s neighbor is so afraid of thinking wrong, that even when he is simply told, that his thoughts are suspicious, he makes no effort to prove, that he remains loyal to the Big Brother but trusts everything about himself and goes to the Ministry of Love for ââ¬Å"reintegrationâ⬠without any complaint. The loyal citizens should not fear, but those, who entered the Ministry of Love are suppressed by all means, including fear. The Ministry knows for sure what each single person is afraid of and uses fear as an ultimate weapon to make the convicts forget about their errors and love the Big Brother again. By fear they make Winston betray his love to Julia and turn it into adoration with Big Brother. They do not kill, they wash the brains, and so love wins. Love, which is based on fear.

Business Cycle Theory :: essays research papers
The Sticky-Wage Model In this model, economists pursue the sluggish adjustment of nominal wages path to explain why it is that the short-run aggregate supply curve is upward sloping. For sticky nominal wages, an increase in the price level lowers the real wage therefore making labor cheaper for firms. Cheaper labor means that firms will hire more labor, and the increased labor will in turn produce more output. The time period where the nominal wage cannot adjust to the changes in price level and output signifies the positive sloping aggregate supply curve. â⬠¢Ã à à à à The nominal wage is set by the workers and the firms based on the target real wage, which may or may not be the labor supply & demand equilibrium, and on price level expectation. W = à à à à à à ¹ à à à à à * à à à à à à à à à à Pe Nominal Wage = Target Real Wage * Expected Price Level After the nominal wage has been set but before any hiring, firms learn the actual price level (P). From this the real wage is derived W/P = à ¹ * Pe/P Real Wage = Target Real Wage * Expected Price Level/Actual Price Level From the equation, real wage = target real wage when expected price level = actual price level real wage > target real wage when expected price level < actual price level real wage < target real wage when expected price level > actual price level The bargaining between workers and firms determine the nominal wage rate but not the actual level of employment. This is determined by the firmsââ¬â¢ hiring decisions and the labor demand function L = Ld(W/P) Output is determined by the production function, Y = F(L). The aggregate supply curve, under the sticky-wage model, summarizes the two functions and the relationship between the price level and output. Any unexpected changes in the price level cause a deviation in the real wage, which in turn, affects the amount of labor and output. â⬠¢Ã à à à à The major weakness of the sticky-wage model however, is that in any model with an unchanging labor demand curve, unemployment falls when the real wage falls. Under this model the opposite happens, which means that the real wage should be countercyclical. Economic data over the past decades in the U.S. shows that the real wage in fact tends to rise along with output. This is evidence contrary to Keynes predictions in the General Theory. The Imperfect-Information Model Characteristics: â⬠¢Ã à à à à Assumes that the market is clear ââ¬â all wages and prices are free to adjust in order to balance supply and demand ââ¬â and that differences in the short-run and long-run aggregate supply curves are from misperceptions about prices

Communication Problems in Hugh Garnerââ¬â¢s ââ¬ÅThe Fatherââ¬Â Essay
Who is perfect; certainly not John Purcel in Hugh Garnerââ¬â¢s short story ââ¬Å"The Fatherâ⬠about a desperate alcoholic father (John Purcel) trying to get closer to his son (Johnny) who seems to be slowly drifting away from him. This will be demonstrated through out a series of examples which will prove the fatherââ¬â¢s drinking problem, his neglective attitude towards his son and his low self esteem. Alcohol can control a personââ¬â¢s life and make them irresponsible which affects their relationships. John Purcell showed a lack of judgment by stopping to have a drink before he even got home from work making him late for the scout meeting with his son. His irresponsibility continued when he met another irresponsible drunken father at the meeting. When the stranger offered John a drink, he gladly accepted the offer stating ââ¬Å"youââ¬â¢re a lifesaverâ⬠. Due to his drunkenness, John Purcell embarrassed his son even further. ââ¬Å"In a paroxysm of pride and happiness he grasped the boyââ¬â¢s hand, and facing the audience, held it aloft like a referee signaling the winner of a boxing bout. There was a short burst of embarrassed laughter from the tablesâ⬠. His drinking affected his actions and caused his son to be humiliated in front of his friends. It is very difficult to have a healthy relationship with someone when you are controlled by alcohol. Building good relationships involves time and effort. John Purcell never put any effort into trying to know his son because ââ¬Å"most of the time he was too preoccupied with other things to pay much heed to the boyââ¬â¢s activitiesâ⬠. He never encouraged or supported Johnny and never participated or went to any of his sonââ¬â¢s events. He did not even know what baseball or swimming team Johnny was on. When the curate, Mr. Redpath, complimented Johnny on his exceptional swimming ability, the father realized that ââ¬Å"he seemed to know less about the boy than anyoneâ⬠. However, he made the excuse that his son ââ¬Å"was only a twelve-year-old who wanted to be left aloneâ⬠. Because the father was so involved in himself, he did not make the time or put forth the effort to develop a proper relationship with his son. A person who has low self-esteem finds it difficult to care for others and himself. John Purcell did not know the scout leaders and the other fathers; he stereotyped them as being ââ¬Å"sissies and goonsâ⬠. When he discovered that Johnny did not have the full scout uniform because of lack of money, his first response was ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s the matter with this family anyway? God knows what the neighbours must think of me.â⬠What others thought was more important to him than his own family. Even though he was cheap with his family, he didnââ¬â¢t want others to know about it. He was very insecure which caused him to feel out of place and unsure of himself. Even when he had made an effort to show an interest in his son, he had been ââ¬Å"pointedly ignoredâ⬠contributing more to his feelings of inadequacy as a father. When one feels like a total failure, it is difficult to have any positive relationships because you are always worried about what others think. In conclusion Johnnyââ¬â¢s father finally realized he had to change in order to be closer to his son. It would be hard for John Purcell to have a close relationship with his son due to his lack of interest in him, his alcoholism, and his lack of self-esteem. Johnââ¬â¢s negative personality dominated his relationships with his son and others.

Online Nursing Class Programs Employment in Long-Term Care Expected to Grow 2019
In the recent past there has been a shift in types of diseases affecting the U.S. population, from acute infections to chronic illnesses. Life expectancy has been steadily increasing. As a result, the percentage of the population over the age of 65 is greater than ever before. In 2000, 12% of the population was over the age of 65. By 2030, that number is expected to grow to 19% while the amount of people over the age of 80 is predicted to more than double. Consequently, nurses who have attended campus or online nursing class programs to work in long-term care are expected to experience significant employment growth in the coming decades. What is Long-Term Care Nursing? 80% of persons aged 65 and older have at least one chronic condition while 50% have at least two. Many end up unable to care for themselves and enter long-term nursing care facilities. Professionals who have attended campus or online nursing class programs to specialize in long-term care nursing are responsible for much of the direct patient care necessary for these elderly patients. Nurses with a campus or online nursing degree may hold positions such as: Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN) Registered Nurse (RN) In-Service Coordinator Director of Nursing (DON) .ue27df5ac33918b687f012512321e697d { padding:0px; margin: 0; padding-top:1em!important; padding-bottom:1em!important; width:100%; display: block; font-weight:bold; background-color:#eaeaea; border:0!important; border-left:4px solid #34495E!important; box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -moz-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -o-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -webkit-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); text-decoration:none; } .ue27df5ac33918b687f012512321e697d:active, .ue27df5ac33918b687f012512321e697d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; text-decoration:none; } .ue27df5ac33918b687f012512321e697d { transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; } .ue27df5ac33918b687f012512321e697d .ctaText { font-weight:bold; color:inherit; text-decoration:none; font-size: 16px; } .ue27df5ac33918b687f012512321e697d .post Title { color:#000000; text-decoration: underline!important; font-size: 16px; } .ue27df5ac33918b687f012512321e697d:hover .postTitle { text-decoration: underline!important; } READ Teachers at the University LevelResponsibilities include everything from assisting residents with activities of daily living to administering tube feedings and providing wound care. Campus and online nursing class programs now also prepare nurses to comply with government regulations in long-term care. Nurses who work in long-term care must complete assessments such as the Minimum Data Set (MDS) and prepare for state inspections on a yearly basis. Required Education to Work as a Long-Term Care Nurse Although registered nurses may legally practice with a hospital diploma, associates degree, or RN to BSN (bachelors degree in nursing), employers most often prefer to hire registered nurses who have earned at least a bachelors degree in nursing. Registered nurses with a bachelors degree are equipped with the communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills necessary in todays health care environment. Taking campus or online nursing class programs towards a bachelors degree can also help registered nurses move into more advanced positions in nursing. .u462c9963c3b20e8b47badf4228316ee3 { padding:0px; margin: 0; padding-top:1em!important; padding-bottom:1em!important; width:100%; display: block; font-weight:bold; background-color:#eaeaea; border:0!important; border-left:4px solid #34495E!important; box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -moz-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -o-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -webkit-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); text-decoration:none; } .u462c9963c3b20e8b47badf4228316ee3:active, .u462c9963c3b20e8b47badf4228316ee3:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; text-decoration:none; } .u462c9963c3b20e8b47badf4228316ee3 { transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; } .u462c9963c3b20e8b47badf4228316ee3 .ctaText { font-weight:bold; color:inherit; text-decoration:none; font-size: 16px; } .u462c9963c3b20e8b47badf4228316ee3 .post Title { color:#000000; text-decoration: underline!important; font-size: 16px; } .u462c9963c3b20e8b47badf4228316ee3:hover .postTitle { text-decoration: underline!important; } READ Online BSN Program Do Employers Differentiate between ADN and BSN NursesProspective students who are interested in RN to BSN online programs may visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource website.
